The things we cherish most about Athens, GA, are at risk in the wake of COVID-19. As some of our favorite businesses close to keep us healthy, Athens Works aims to “flatten the curve” of local business losses by connecting those who can pledge resources to invest in our local businesses.
Our beloved Athens, known for its vibrant culture, dining, and music scene, is under threat of severe and lasting economic loss due to the current public health crises. Out of respect for us, their neighbors, small businesses in The Classic City are losing revenue as they close to help flatten the curve of COVID-19. Safe child care is essential for parents to return to work, and providers face steep PPE and related costs requiring our support. Let’s join together to flatten the curve while also supporting these cherished establishments.
Individuals and Businesses who can pledge resources are asked to do so in a way that supports the local economy. This initiative asks Athenians to spend a portion of their paycheck, stimulus check, or otherwise to support businesses in their time of need. Individuals are also encouraged to move forward on services, projects, or products produced here locally. In turn, Businesses operating in the Athens area are asked to pledge to purchase meals (or gift cards) from local Eateries to feed their workforce while they continue to service, supply, maintain, and build Athens.
Athenians are loyal to local businesses. Many want to support them during this time of need but may be uncertain regarding how they can do so. In partnership with the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce and Envision Athens, this initiative will be promoted as a way for dozens of stakeholders in the Athens area to support a cornerstone of our community and economic well-being. As an Individual you can purchase goods or services through Businesses or meals directly from Eateries.
If your business is positioned to do so, we invite you to take the pledge by contributing to the initiative’s Eateries or to an essential need in the community. Currently, a prominent need is for Personal Protective Equipment for early childcare centers as they reopen. We have confidence that the community response will help elevate the revenue for neighboring businesses, and also equip businesses with the necessary tools to return to work.
If you would like to contribute to the timely and safe reopening of childcare centers, please take the pledge below and email athenschildcare@fc-cis.org to take action.
If your establishment cannot operate as usual during the specified period, sign up as an eatery. You should be prepared to deliver pre-packaged meals for the employees of Businesses (and possibly for other Athenians in need). You will be paid by your Business partners for the meals you prepare, and we ask that you consider providing low-cost, high value products.
